Artists from around the state and the country have submitted powerful art that tells the story of their lived experiences with substance use and/or personal trauma, and recovery.
Original art and prints from the exhibition are available for purchase at [email protected]. Of the more than 100 submissions, 20 of them were selected for inclusion in a commemorative book. Each image in the book is accompanied by a riveting story provided by the artist. Proceeds from the sale of the book, From Harm to Hope, will benefit operations funds for both of the nonprofits: The Perfectly Flawed Foundation and NCI ARTworks. Copies of the book can be preordered at: https://checkout.square.site/buy/JOM7DWCL3TTEXOLRAOHLFH2N For information about availability of the art contained in this book, please contact NCI ARTworks at [email protected] When asked what motivated Messina to install an art exhibition related to substance use, trauma, and recovery, she said that, after talking with Luke Tomsha, the founder of The Perfectly Flawed Foundation, she felt that showcasing a complex issue like substance use and recovery through the lens of art could provide a platform for understanding the issue better. After putting out a call for artists earlier this year, Messina said that, “Having read and listened to the tragic, heartbreaking, and hope-inspiring stories that accompanied the art submissions, I felt compelled to offer a platform to showcase the most engaging, representative pieces of art that shed a light on the complex issue of substance use, personal trauma, and recovery, so that’s what NCI ARTworks and The Perfectly Flawed Foundation are doing on September 8th.” By partnering with The Perfectly Flawed Foundation, NCI ARTworks is able to share not only the evocative images resulting from the experiences of the artists, but also the local, state, and national resources to combat and mitigate the trauma and aid in the recovery process. |
